The process of making paper is the same all over the world but the recycled paper used to make these notebook journals is a little different!
The fibres are pulped by the elephant's digestion, instead of by hand or machine, and then delivered out the back!
The elephant dung is collected, then vigourously boiled with margosa leaves, which are an eco friendly natural disinfectant, then made into paper after mixing with 25% recycled paper.
The coarseness and shade of the recycled paper is entirely dependent on the elephants diet making each recycled paper sheet in our journal notebooks unique.
We source our recycled paper from the Maximus Elephant Conservation Trust in Sri Lanka, they have their workshop on the grounds of the Millennium Elephant Foundation which is a charity that cares for sick and disabled elephants.
We are promoting this elephant dung recycled paper as the more cool journals and notebooks people buy, the more elephant dung paper we order, the more money the elephants get.
With the proceeds from sales of our cool journals and notebooks we are helping to educate rural villages that are plagued by elephants eating crops - after the elephant's natural habitats have been taken over by humans - to see elephants as a form of income and not just as a pest. The villagers get paid for collecting the elephant dung to produce handmade paper therefore giving them a reason to live with, rather than against, the elephants.
