These handmade notebooks are made from elephant dung paper and make a great gift!
Handmade in Sri Lanka by the Maximus Elephant Conservation Trust,
these elephant dung notebooks are fairly traded and are part of the
Eco Maximus range of Elephant Dung paper products from Paper High.
The Elephant dung notebooks are available in a range of different colours, and sizes - Please note colours and designs may slightly vary.
Handmade Notebook Dimensions:
Large 150mm x 210 mm
Medium 105mm x 140mm
Small 85mm x 100 mm Please note, due to the handmade nature of these notebook journals the design may vary slightly. The process of making elephant dung paper is a little different to making handmade paper!
The fibres are pulped by the elephant, instead of by hand or machine, whilst digesting, then nature ensures they come out the back!
The
Elephant dung is collected and then vigorously boiled with margosa
leaves, which are a natural disinfectant, then made into paper after
mixing with 25% recycled paper.
The coarseness
and shade of the elephant dung paper is entirely dependent on the
elephants diet making each sheet unique. We source or paper from the
Maximus Elephant Conservation Trust in Sri Lanka, they have their
workshop on the grounds of the Millennium Elephant Foundation which is
a charity that cares for sick and disabled elephants.
We are promoting this elephant dung paper, as the more people buy, the
more we order, the more money the elephants get. We are helping to
educate rural villages that are plagued by elephant eating crops, after
their natural habitats have been taken over by humans, to see elephants
as a form of income and not just as a pest.
The
Sri Lankan villagers get paid for collecting Elephant dung therefore
giving them a reason to live with rather than against the elephants.By
buying this product you can give yourself a pat on the back as you are
helping to preserve the lives of these majestic creatures
